This building in the modernized Gothic style was built in 1902 - 1904 to the order of Dmitri Orlov. Although the architect "copied" much of the decor from a publication by his St. Petersburg's colleague, and the owner had to answer for the project's non-agreement with the city authorities. "Richard Castle in Kiev" won recognition and love of the Kievites. This romantic name stuck to the building in 1960s, thanks to writer Viktor Nekrasov.
